Finding Common Ground

Finding common ground: a comparison between coastal nature-based solutions in the Netherlands and British Columbia, Canada

Report
December 2024

Overview

This article looks at how coastal areas like the Netherlands and British Columbia, Canada, are trying out nature-based solutions (NBS) to deal with rising sea levels and flood risks. These solutions aim to protect communities while also supporting local ecosystems and values. The study compares four pilot projects—two urban and two suburban—to understand what helps or hinders their success. It also looks at the history of flood management in each place to provide context. One major challenge is how to expand these pilot projects beyond the test phase. The article highlights that sharing knowledge and working together across countries can help speed up progress on climate adaptation efforts.
