Living Dyke Pilot

Boundary Bay Living Dyke Pilot Project

Pilot Project

Ongoing

Overview

The Living Dyke is an innovative pilot project using nature-based solutions to protect coastal communities and ecosystems from sea level rise. The pilot is based on the idea of establishing a gentle, raised slope to help natural marshes keep up with sea level rise. By gradually building up the foreshore with sediment and native marsh plants, the project helps salt marshes keep pace with rising seas, reducing flood risk. Designed as a phased and adaptive approach, it allows for testing and refining techniques over time.

The first pilot location was created in front of the Boundary Bay Dyke in Delta, and the second pilot location on the shore immediately west of Mud Bay Park in Surrey. This project involves close collaboration with partners and stakeholders, including Semiahmoo First Nation and the City of Delta.
