Retreating from Risk
Retreating from Risk: decision-supports for the equitable implementation of retreat to build climate resilience
Partnership Initiative
Ongoing
Overview
Managed retreat, the strategic relocation of people, property, and infrastructure from high-risk areas, is emerging as a transformative adaptation approach to mitigate climate hazards while addressing social justice. This $2.45 million, four-year project, led by Living with Water member Brent Doberstein, adopts a collaborative approach between researchers and solution seekers to develop decision-making frameworks and tools. Focused on communities in Canada, the USA, and Indonesia, the initiative emphasizes equitable planning and proactive engagement to support managed retreat strategies. By integrating diverse perspectives, the project aims to enhance climate resilience, safeguard vulnerable populations, and promote fair adaptation outcomes in response to increasing flood risks.
