Overview

This study explores the intersection of nature-based solutions (NbS) and colonial power structures, focusing on their implementation in settler-colonial contexts like Canada. Recognizing that NbS practices often perpetuate systemic inequities, the research outlines a framework to address these issues by shifting power dynamics and centering Indigenous knowledge. Through a comprehensive literature review, it critiques the colonial underpinnings of current NbS initiatives and highlights their potential for harm when Indigenous perspectives are sidelined. The study introduces a three-stage pathway—pre-engagement, internal engagement, and collective engagement—designed to foster ethical collaboration between Indigenous and non-Indigenous partners. It provides actionable guidance to practitioners, emphasizing long-term relationships, flexibility, and mutual respect. This approach aims to dismantle power asymmetries and support truly inclusive, place-based environmental strategies. The findings serve as a call to action for researchers and practitioners to critically reflect on their roles and adopt practices that contribute to equitable and transformative environmental solutions.
